![]() ![]() The loss of control sets Joe off, and plants You into new territory while still remaining true to what it made good the first time around. ![]() While Joe’s attempts at a normal life start pretty simply, a night out with his new aristocratic friends ends with a body on Joe’s dinner table, thus setting the season into motion with a soft reset of sorts, making Joe the victim in someone else’s murder mystery.Įvery season has done a sort of soft reset, but this is the farthest the concept has been pushed, with Joe being on the opposite end of the stalking. You: Penn Badgley - Photo: Courtesy of Netflix © 2022 Among these are spoiled rich kids Adam and Phoebe (Lukas Gage and Tilly Keeper), famous memoirist and mayoral hopeful Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers), and Malcolm’s girlfriend Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), who, despite her icy demeanor, becomes Joe’s latest obsession.Ĭandace Owens: ‘Do Not Shop at Target or Else You’re Gay and a Pervert’ Joe becomes friends with coworker Malcolm (Stephan Hagan), who introduces him to his circle of very rich socialites. After completely setting his life ablaze, season four finds Joe in London, donning the name Jonathan Moore, and becoming an English professor while trying to have a normal life. Over the first three seasons, Joe traveled across the coasts, going from being a bookstore manager in New York to a young dad in suburban California. On paper, this seems like a strange recommendation in the #MeToo era, but You‘s greatest strength has become its humor, focusing on entertainment and sardonic musings on everyday life from a truly messed up man. It gets a 4 because I laughed occasionally, they didn't kill Paco, and the paint job on the Skylark was perfection.Badgley stars as Joe Goldberg, a troubled sociopath with inclinations for becoming obsessed with random women, ingratiating himself into their lives, and then killing anyone who gets in his way. If Joe could have just memorized a pick-up line from Reddit he could have got in so much quicker. ![]() Benji was right about Beck, the alcoholic sleeping with Paco's Mom was right about Joe, and Beck is struggling to find a place among her in peers that I wouldn't even want to be in the same room with. Then there was the disposal of the body in a bonfire near a hiking trail! It was all down hill from there. The cops would have undoubtedly smelled Benji's fetid corpse, and if, by miracle, they didn't, they wouldn't let go of the fact he gave a child money to by all kinds of supplies that'd put you on a no fly list. The decomposed hipster in the vault downstairs would have cleared out the whole building. The plot holes are what does this show in. I'm unable to get past the fact that Joe is entirely unlikeable, and it's not because he's a murdering psychopath. This show asks for too much from it's viewers, especially past the first episode. ![]() There's nothing especially unique about the plot, aside from Joe's reliance on public data obtained from Google if Beck minded her privacy settings, the pilot would have ended 10 minutes in. The tension this show creates from the get go is certainly there. It's a neat gambit to use an unreliable narrator and tell the story from the antagonist's point of view and one that I look forward to them exploring further. It does stretch believability at times about how people basically don't see Joe standing in plain sight lol but it's a contrivance I'm willing to forgive for such a strong plot. Penn Badgley does a fantastic job showing the creepiness and scariness of Joe and the writing felt tighter. From that point on I fully loved the show. You demonstrates exactly how a) from the killer's perspective they genuinely believe they are normal and in the right and b) how difficult it is to genuinely spot patterns of abuse. I particularly feel this when reading about serial killers like Ted Bundy. It's pretty clear that Joe is a psychopath but, in real life, it's often easy to think: how did people not notice such shocking behaviour. However, around Peach's death, I realised the concept of this show and it elevated it to a new level. The first few eps seemed to confirm this suspicion. I wasn't sure what its message would be as there are quite a few pieces of media that straight up glorify pretty toxic traits. Initially I was quite apprehensive about You.
